The Rose Theater 2001 Farnam St | Omaha, NE 68102

As part of the Family Opera Series, The Pigeon Keeper, a mystical new opera welcomes opera goers of every age to The Rose Theater.

On an island in the Mediterranean, a fisherman and his daughter pull a boy like a fish from the sea. Who is this child? Why won’t he speak? How will they find him a home?

Told through cinematic projections, moving music, and children’s chorus, this contemporary fable invites audiences from every generation to celebrate the kindness of strangers and the unexpected places we find family.

Synopsis

An imaginary island in the Mediterranean. From across the sea, refugees have been washing up on its shores. Yet on this island, the locals avoid all strangers, including the mysterious Pigeon Keeper, who arrived long ago.

In the village lives a 12-year-old girl, Orsia. Her father, Thalasso, is a fisherman. Times are hard. Fish are few. Seven years ago, Orsia’s mother died giving birth to her stillborn baby brother Kosmo. On the anniversary of that day, Orsia and Thalasso are out fishing when they see in the middle of the sea…a boy. He will not speak. He is the same age Kosmo would have been.

They take him home. Orsia wants him to live with them. Thalasso says he can stay—but for three nights only. If Orsia cannot find someone to take the boy in, he must go to the camp on “the other side of the island.”

And so, Orsia sets off on her quest with the boy to find him a home, and perhaps his voice, and perhaps even the key to healing her own broken family.
