Prelude Talk
Please join us in the Grand Lobby for our brief pre-opera talk from Holland Community Opera Fellow Fernando Alejandro Montejano offering insight into Eugene Onegin beginning at 6:40pm on Friday and 1:10 pm on Sunday. We strongly encourage you to read the synopsis before the opera begins. This will be listed in your program at the Orpheum Theater, or you can read it here.

Multiple surface and garage parking options are offered all within two blocks of the Orpheum Theater and additional parking is available at the OPPD Energy Plaza on Howard Street between 16th and 17th Streets. The garage closes 30 minutes after the production ends.
Guide to the Opera
Is this your first time attending an opera? If you're new to a certain performance, or just want to come prepared, it's great to read a synopsis or attend the pre-performance lecture prior to the show. Also, we don't expect you to learn a new language for the performance. All performances will have English supertitles projected above the stage so you can follow along. Click here for a helpful guide to the opera including suggestions on what to wear, when to arrive and about the orchestra.
In what language will Eugene Onegin be presented?
The opera will be sung in Russian, the original language in which it was written. English supertitles will be available on a screen above the stage and in the front of the Loge.
Are there lighting or sound elements I should be aware of?
There will be theatrical lighting elements for this performance. The singers do not use microphones, just their natural voices projecting from the stage.
Tchaikovsky & Ukraine
- Tchaikovsky first visited Ukraine in 1864 and thereafter often spent his summers there in Kamianka at the home of his sister and in Nyzy, where he lived during 1876–79.
- Tchaikovsky’s paternal grandfather was born in Ukraine and he spent time there every year.
- At least 30 of his works have Ukrainian subjects or incorporate Ukrainian folk songs or melodies.
- Tchaikovsky composed works such as Swan Lake, The Maid of Orleans, The Sleeping Beauty, and Eugene Onegin while living in Kamianka, Ukraine.
- He was one of the first artists to bridge connections between Russia and Western European music of the day.
